Curriculum - Music
 
 

Key Stage 3 –
All pupils have the opportunity to study music as part of the general school curriculum at Key Stage 3. Pupils are introduced to the key musicianship skills areas of listening, performing, composing and appraising through a wide variety of popular, classical and world music topics. The chief aim for the study of music at this level is for pupils to develop a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music as listeners, performers or creators. Secondary aims include the development of “life skills” or personal and social skills through music, including communication, listening, expression, team and leadership skills.
Year 7 – Sonic Explorations, Mood & Communication, Winter, The World of Scales, Soundscapes, Graphic Scores
Year 8 – The Blues, Hooks & Grounds & Riffs, World Percussion Styles
Year 9 – Film Music, Minimalism, War & Peace, Ensemble Study

Art Department

Key Stage 4

Pupils in Years 10 and 11 have the option of continuing the study of music at GCSE level. Higher level performance, composition and listening skills are approached through the OCR syllabus which covers four main areas of study:

  • AoS 1 – Exploiting the Resource (chief practical study)
  • AoS 2 – Techniques of Melodic Composition (Folk Music of the British Isles, plainchant, Indian Classical music, Baroque and Classical forms and 20th Century innovations such as whole tone, serialist and blues forms)
  • AoS 3  – Dance Music (Elizabethan Pavan & Galliard, 19th Century Viennese Waltz, 1970’s/80’s Disco)
  • AoS 4 – Traditions and Innovation (Salsa, Bhangra, Minimalism)

Pupils are assessed as follows:

  • 60% of the final grade consists of written and practical coursework (recorded)
  • 15% of the final grade consists of a practical terminal task
  • 25% of the final grade consists of a listening and theory exam
