The Essex Jiangsu centre for the promotion of Chinese and Mandarin culture was officially opened on Monday 22nd September 2008.
The centre will operate from two sites, one at the Anglo-European school, Ingatestone and the other from the Harlow Study Centre, headquarters of the Harlow Education Consortium, of which our Head Stephen Chamberlain is the chair.
The opening ceremony at the Harlow site was attended by dignitaries and officials from both Essex county and Jiangsu province. In his opening the speech ceremony, Mr. Chamberlain celebrated the continued partnership between the two regions which has now stretched over the past twenty years and the role the centre will play in further nurturing understanding across the two cultures.
Also attending the ceremony were the eleven students from Burnt Mill who visited China in May. They participated in some demonstration Mandarin classes – along with students from Passmores and Stewards schools - symbolising the growing importance of the language on our curriculum.
The centre will now serve as a focal point for learning, not only in Harlow but throughout Essex.
